Ombligon Coffee. Nestor Lasso Ombligon. Finca el Diviso

Ombligon Coffee Beans

This unique varietal of coffee is like a bowl of fruit salad. The meticulously performed processing has definitely played a role in the juicy cup it produces. Complex, bright, fruity, chuggable. Pour overs are well-structured, long, and memorable. We taste date, malted chocolate, strawberry, orange marmalade, rose water, cherry, mango, and a little banana sweetness.

The smell while brewing is like opening a can of fruit cocktail next to a bouquet of roses. As a single origin espresso we tasted all of the above as well as hints of brewers yeast and sparkling wine. It’s one of the best Colombian coffees we’ve had. Lots of fun.

About Finca El Diviso

Finca El Diviso started out in 1996 as a commercial farm with a smaller selection of varietals. Owner Jose Uribe Lasso built a farm management team including his sons Johnathan, Nestor, and Adrian. Jose has since handed over the farm to his sons. They worm diligently to implement and invent experimental processing techniques. They also grow a lot of different specialty coffee varietals and cultivars.

Adrian and Nestor have both studied at the Colombian national coffee education program, SENA. Nestor was recognized in the 14th annual Sprudgie Awards in the Most Notable Producer category.

Along with their neighbor, Jhoan Vergara, they formed a B Corp, Lohas Beans, to create a powerhouse of specialty coffee. Their farms are a quintessential force empowering competition grade coffees in the region. They have refined the infrastructure of their plantations and endeavored to improve the quality of their coffee through preservation of the native forest environment, centralized milling and processing, and facilitating new experimental processing techniques.

They planted new specialty varietals such as Pink Bourbon, Tabi, Aji, Gesha, Ombligon, and Sidra. Some of you will remember that we featured a bright and juicy washed Gesha from Finca El Diviso on this site in 2019. We have also featured their Sidra before in a few different incarnations.

We are elated to offer this new Ombligon microlot, and to showcase the farm once again. This is some of the most unique and exciting coffee we’ve ever had.

Their plantation and mill includes 14 hectares utilized for coffee and an additional 5 hectares of natural reserve where they take care of and preserve the diverse flora and fauna of the landscape.

What is Ombligon Coffee?

El Diviso produced the Ombligon Coffee that Australia’s Jack Simpson used in his espresso, milk, and signature drinks at the 2023 World Barista Championships. He placed third!

The Ombligon varietal is a mysterious one. As far as we know, it is currently only produced in Huila, Colombia. It is named “belly button” in Spanish which describes the unusual shape of its cherries.

The varietal is a natural mutation that occurred in Colombia. Nestor believes it is related to an Ethiopian landrace variety, but also may be derived from other native Colombian varieties found on their farm.

  • Firstly, the trees produce an abundance of tightly clustered cherries.
  • Secondly, It has wide, broad leaves.
  • Finally, it’s branches grow upward.

These are all traits it shares with the Caturra varietal.

Because it is resistant to leaf rust and is high yielding, it may also be related to Bourbon or Pacamara.
